Welcome back to another summer of CanAm racing on Lake Ontario! Our planning committee is well underway with preparations for another great event. We seem to have a good formula going that we adopted from the long run of the Level Regatta and we plan to keep much of that tradition alive this July. So if you have not already made plans to return to Youngstown on July 22nd, please get your crew lined up and get your boats registered.
Pursuit Racing is OUT and PHRF Course racing is IN! We try to adjust a little each year and give the competitors what they want, so back by popular demand we’d like to announce that we will have a racing circle with starts for PHRF Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker boats. The Pursuit Racing was somewhat of an experiment and some seemed to enjoy the format, but we heard more and more that the racers wanted multiple races on WL courses. PHRF racing will be scored Time on Time.
So far we have the following fleets:
J/22
J/70
J/24
Melges 24
Kirby 25
Tripp 26
Laser 28
J/88
Beneteau 36.7
PHRF 1 Spinnaker
PHRF 2 Spinnaker
PHRF Non-Spinnaker
*Remember that we will add a start for any class that can get 5 boats on the line!
A Plea from your Race Chairman Don Finkle: Carrying over from the days of the Level Regatta we have always tried to provide quality race management for you. We are racers ourselves and we know how important it is to have good RC work. This is the major reason why we go to the considerable effort of having so many separate race circles and RC’s, to maximize the number of races we can get in, properly size the courses to the fleets on each course, reduce interference from other fleets, and reduce the time you wait for others to start and finish. However, we need to be able to adequately plan. And that means we need you to sign up early so we can be sure to have all the resources we need. We know you want a competitive fleet to sail against and signing up early helps attract others to attend. So please go to Yacht Scoring now and sign up, we don’t need any money at this time, we simply want to build out our race circles and arrange for adequate staffing and boats.

Three Race Days for Great Lakes Championships: Both the J/70 and Tripp 26 classes will be racing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as part of a special request to host their championships. In the future, if you’d like the YYC CanAm to host your championship, we will do whatever we can to accommodate.
Social Program: We are trying to keep costs down for boat owners and their crew. With that goal in mind, we’re including a lot in the entry fee, more than most regattas we attend. Aside from the top notch racing and social entertainment ashore, the entry fee includes wristbands for you and all of your crew. That wristband gets you 5 free drink tickets (beers are $1 and $2 thereafter, all weekend ). Our bar hours are a lot longer than other regattas, we open as soon as you get to shore and stay open late into the evening. Breakfast snack and coffee on Saturday and Sunday mornings before racing, and pizza on Sunday after racing. As always, we will have live bands Friday and Saturday night, so don’t plan on going to bed early!
Great Food We love to have everyone stay on YYC grounds and we have setup some great food options. On Friday night, we will have “The Great Foodini” food truck back again, which was a huge hit last year. Dinner Saturday Night under the Tent: On Saturday we will be selling buffet dinners under the main tent for $16 a plate. If you would like something else, the Yacht Club will also be serving dinners off the menu.
No Fee Launching, Dockage, Mast Stepping, Trailer Storage: As road warriors ourselves, we try to make this affordable and easy for those trailering in from out of town. We have volunteer committee to help assist with the entire process. We have two (2-ton) cranes for single point launching. For larger boats (up to 40ft) we have a marine travelift and mast stepping crane operated by RCR Yachts, also free to competitors. We will store your trailers for the entire event, again no cost to you.
Hockey Tournament: 2014 champ was from Canada. 2015 saw the Americans pull off the victory. Who can put a dream team together to win in 2016?!
Official Regatta Photographer Tim Wilkes: Tim and team will be back again as our photographer for the event, check out their photos from last year and previous Level Regattas, they do great work. Tim will be back under the tent in his usual spot. timwilkes.com
Awards: We will have Tim Wilkes do the awards again this year, here is a photo of the winning J88 team “Deviation”.
New Dock: The sucken guest dock has been removed and we have a brand new dock completed last fall for out of town guests to raft on, adding many docking spots closer to the action.
Drone Video: Last year was a test run and we think we can do better this year! We are going to do some more drone racing footage on several courses for racers to watch under the tent at night.
Sponsorship Help: We have several great sponsors back again this year, to be announced shortly on our website and social media. If you have a company interested in sponsoring the 2016 event, please reach out to us. We have a great sponsorship packet that outlines all of the benefits given to each sponsor at various levels. Thanks to Elderwood, Quantum Sails, Merrill Lynch, and Hewlett Packard who are already signed on as sponsors.
Logistics: Accommodations are still available at the Youngstown Motel (www.youngstownmotel.net), Ontario House a.k.a Stone Jug, Emerson House (www.emersonhouse lodging.com), Riverview/Riverloft Inn (suedory@hotmail.com). For those die-hard’s who still like to camp, the same piece of property on the corner of Hinman and Main Street is available. There is a grocery market (www.mellonis.com) in town which can fix you boxed lunches, Rite Aid for those late night essentials, and of course Anchor Spirits Liquors for all of your libations. For the larger vessels that will be using a mooring, YYC’s Launch Service hours will be available daily. Hours shall be posted on the side of the launch shed. And while you are here, YYC will extend our bar and restaurant hours during the event. If you’ve been here before for the Level Regatta, you know we like to party late into the evening!
